Why Pedri is a generational footballer 🤝
Age: 19.
Position: Midfielder.
Games played: 123.
Experienced, but also young. Playing in a position where players like Xavi & Modric couldn’t properly dominate until they got older.
One of the best midfielders in the world. This was proven in the Euros 2020, where he at the age of 18 bossed the midfield against quality opponents. He won the “Euro 2020 Young Player of the Tournament” award.
Luis Enrique had this to say: "What Pedri has done in this tournament, at 18, no one has done. Not even Andrés Iniesta did that; it's incredible, unique."
Unique. A word that describes Pedri perfectly. At such a young age players are expected to make silly mistakes on the pitch. They are expected to play accordingly to their age. Well, that does not apply for Pedri.
Pedri is playing like he has been at this level for 10 years. His ability to keep the ball, control the tempo, and set up combinations with his teammates are world class qualities every team would benefit from.
He is not a goalscorer, but a player transporting the ball from the defense to the attack. Statistically he averages 1.66 passes into the penalty area per 90 minutes played. He provides 6.92 progressive carries & 3.67 shot creating actions. At the very top among midfielders.
One of Pedri’s most essential abilities is how he is able to play under pressure from opponents. He is very rarely dispossessed (1.89 per 90 min, bottom 5% in the world), and completes 11.8 passes under pressure (per 90 min, top 7%).
In other words, Pedri is involved a lot, but with few errors. His involvements contributes to his team scoring goals. Oh, did I also mention that he is among the top 1% of the best players in the world when it comes to pressure applied in the final third? Well, now you know.
