Sure a temple of the scale of Braihadeeshwara temple or a majestic idol/vigraha as in Tirumala temple may not have existed in times of Rama and Krishna. May not have existed in so called "Vedic" era. So what?

We didn't drop "older" forms of ritual transmission as we adopted to "newer" forms. This is not like some rocket launch.

Oral transmission continues to this day. Adopting written word didn't annihilate the oral.
Idol worship co-exists with so called primordial fire worship.
Temple worship co-exists along with private puja room worship and public worship forms like Ganesh utsav.

A traditional rite like Sandhya Vandanam is still done with water and mantra chants. But soon after the same person may get on to do murti pooja. He may then step out to visit a temple. This is perfectly okay. Need not get into historical hair splitting on this.

These multiplicities don't have a problem with each other . None cannibalizes the other. None seeks to annihilate the other. All co-exist.
This is Hinduism. Each facet has its own primacy and sphere of influence.
