recently, a college invited me to give a talk for a state level math workshop which was organized in them. as i was busy with my own work, i told them that i don't have time and patience to prepare ppt, i can only do chalk and talk. 1/n
they agreed to it. also, they gave me freedom to choose topic as well. as participants were bsc students, i thought it is better to choose something simple but interesting. from geometry to algebra i thought about every topic, but i couldn't make up my mind. 2/n
a day before the talk, when i was reading some poetry, it came to my mind that why shouldn't i start with basic prastAra, chandasshAstra of PingaLa, works of VIrahanka, Halayudha etc. although i had lot of hesitation regarding how students may take it, i decided do that. 3/n
i started with Fibonacci sequence, then about his book Liber Abaci and 'indian symbols' for numerals. from there i went to prastAra, nasTa, uddisTa, sankhya etc of pingaLa, their connections with binary system, some interesting works of later day commentators 4/n
finally came back to Fibonacci sequence, and its origin in Indian prosody. derived few recurence definition using guru-lagu argument.
contrary to my expectation, almost everyone in the class liked it. they were nicely responding. my talk was actually 5/n

scheduled for one and half hour. but it extended more than two hour and fifteen minutes because of the active participation from the students.
from my earlier experience, i say this rarely happens. that means, my gambling worked. this shows we can/should introduce maths 6/n

in a unique and interesting way. it also shows that, our science students are really interested in chandas, poetry etc. given a chance they will definitely learn it.
i don't know is there any option in NEP like this. n/n
