It’s fascinating how Europe constitutes this foil for the progressive US left, imagining it some utopic, open-minded alternative to a benighted America.
In fact, European drug policy is way more hardline than American, European abortion policy more restrictive than ours, etc.

Of course, the reverse is true for the US right, imagining Europe this hellscape of rationed, socialized healthcare (it’s not), abridgment of free speech (European intellectual culture is more open than American), etc.
Per usual, it’s all a projection of domestic politics.
