[3] Ibn Qudāmah’s Stance on Allah’s Attributes
[1] Firstly, it should be noted that he’s just reiterating what al-GhazālÄ« said. Moreover, if you read it in context, he’s speaking about the ʼāyah of istiwāʼ amongst other ʼāyāt.
Let’s see what ibn Qudāmah has to say about istiwāʼ and Ź»uluww in general.
[2] Ibn Qudāmah reports that someone asked ibn al-ʼAŹ»rābÄ« what الرحمن على العرؓ Ų§Ų³ŲŖŁˆŁ‰ļ“æ means. He answers that it means Allah is above His throne.
Notice the difference between asking what the meaning is and asking how. When ʼImām Mālik was asked how, he rebuked the man.
Next, if we look at the beginning of his book, he groups many of the ʼāyāt which indicate that Allah is above His throne such as the good words and the angels ascending towards Him, and even the ʼāyah where Firʻawn wanted to build a tower because he believed Mūsā was a liar.
He quotes ibn Khuzaymah affirming that Allah is above His throne and that whoever denies it is a disbeliever.
According to Fakhr ud-Dīn ar-Rāzī, ibn Khuzaymah committed shirk and was mentally deficient. I wonder why ibn Qudāmah was quoting a dumb mushrik.
Moreover, he even quotes the įø„adÄ«th of Allah’s descent as a proof for Allah being above His throne. Notice how he uses a synonym for nuzÅ«l.
He even goes a step further and quotes ibn ʻAbd il-Barr explaining this Ḅadīth.
Ibn al-Jawzī criticizes ibn ʻAbd il-Barr for this, saying that he was ignorant to affirm a meaning for the descent. I wonder why ibn Qudāmah was quoting an ignorant Ḅashawī.
[3] What was ibn Qudāmah’s general stance regarding Allah’s attributes?
He quotes ibn Ź»Abd il-Barr’s famous statement where he says that we affirm these attributes in a real sense and not in a metaphorical sense.
We also find ibn Qudāmah saying that we have to affirm the apparent meanings for Allah’s attributes.
He even explains what apparent meanings are, saying that they can either be literal or metaphorical depending on the context.
Futhermore, ibn Qudāmah likens the affirmation of these attributes to attributes like hearing, seeing, knowledge, and life. This indicates that he knew the meanings of all of Allah’s attributes.
Ibn Qudāmah quotes ʼAbÅ« įø¤anÄ«fah saying that we shouldn’t speak about Allah having a body as this is the way of the philosophers, rather we should follow the ʼathar and the salaf.
He also affirms that Allah speaks in sounds and letters. From the apparent of what was said here, it also suggests that he believed Allah speaks when He wills.
I conclude with ibn Qudāmah defending ʼAbū ʼIsmāʻīl al-Harawī from the charges of anthropomorphism of ibn al-Jawzī.
