This article by Joel Kotkin is some of the most pitiful garbage I have ever encountered in opinion journalism.
Quick thread on some of the highlights illustrating just how low the bar has become over at @Newsweek. 🧵
First, the total lack of fact-checking: he claims “most” of the 10 people murdered were Black. Multiple sources have confirmed all 10 were Black. Just lazy as hell.
Claims liberals are blaming “anyone outside their progressive circles” for the massacre. Hyperbole par excellence.
This is one of the most offensive things. I’ve seen SO MANY conservatives just nonchalantly characterize the Waukesha massacre as an ideologically possessed Black nationalist who sought to murder as many white people as he could. THERE IS NO EVIDENCE OF THIS. None at all.
Receipts: “Authorities have said there is no clear motive as to why Brooks allegedly did so." npr.org
"We are confident he acted alone," Thompson said. "There is no evidence this is a terrorist incident." cnn.com
The author claims US progressives think only whites can be evil “due to their racial genome.” The combination of pseudoscientific racism and projection of his own fears of retributive racial violence against whites is reminiscent of the 19th century.
Then, classic denialism. 🙄
This is the most amazing part of the article: The primary figures cited as evidence for the US being at its least racist point in history are the facts that “salsa outsells ketchup and Modelo is about to surpass Budweiser as the nation’s top beer brand.”
Can’t make this shit up.
These paragraphs read like caricatures of the worst kinds of conservative arguments for the idea that we have achieved a post-racial society: interracial intimacy has gone up and three out of four Americans think diversity good!
Agreed, buddy. But if “equal opportunity for all” doesn’t include desegregating the public school system and radically redistributing the nation’s wealth, you’re not actually in favor of equal opportunity. And maybe your story about America should focus less on beer and ketchup.
