I always had this question - What if I'm trying for the first time? I haven't worked before, nor do I have any testimonials.
Easy! Leverage the free blogging platforms. For example - Medium, Typeshare, Hashnode, etc. And oh! Twitter and LinkedIn too!

Once your Portfolio and Profile are on the track, the only thing that is left: To persevere.

- Engage with people in your niche
