1️⃣ Al-Haritha (#الحارثة) district in Basra is heavily controlled by authoritarian tribal leaders “shyoukh”.
Honor killings, domestic abuse, and forced marriages against girls are the new norm in this area w/o legal prosecution or accountability.

2️⃣ Girls are forced into marriage bc of family threats, poverty, and lack of alternatives. Limited access to education and families’ prioritization of boys’ rather than girls’ education, contribute to perpetuate the practice and is a main root cause of domestic abuse.
#الحارثة
3️⃣ Child marriage not only puts a stop to girls' hopes and dreams. It also hampers efforts to end poverty and achieve economic growth and equity. Moreover, the oppression they face bc of male family figures make them prone to suffer from mental illnesses.
#الحارثة
4️⃣ When women and girls try to speak up, they are faced with dismissive attitudes that claim that it isn’t the time for addressing women’s issues as if women’s issues are divorced from the world of men and the sociopolitical unrest that the entire country suffers from.
#الحارثة
5️⃣In this excessively patriarchal area, the activities of girls and women are closely monitored. The maintenance of a woman’s virginity and “sexual purity” are considered to be the responsibility of male relatives, first her father and brothers, and then her husband.
#الحارثة
6️⃣ However, a woman can be targeted for murder for a variety of other reasons, including refusing to enter into an arranged marriage or seeking a divorce or separation, even from an abusive and over controlling husband.
#الحارثة
7️⃣ Lastly, a violent act that results in murder, such as honor killings is regulated by the Iraqi Penal Code No. 111 of the year 1969, which stipulates a penalty of imprisonment not exceeding 3 yrs shall be imposed. Sadly, hardly anyone gets imprisoned bc of tribal interference.
