.@LisaCurtisDC, India is expanding its oil purchases to curb inflation that is in large part a result of of a conflict between two third parties. It’s better to be seen as an unreliable partner than to to lose competitiveness versus China which picks up cheap Russian commodities.
“The prospect of upsetting Washington should be particularly concerning for Indian policymakers.”
I think they already have, and for good reason. Your frankly obnoxious article only confirms to Indians that the US is an international bully which must lose more space in Asia.
.@LisaCurtisDC advocates India buys US military hardware or else potentially face sanctions. I’d wager the US will never sanctions India unless it wants to lose the last hope of countering China. As for technology, ToT and co-dev with France is more than viable and sustainable.
.@LisaCurtisDC India doesn’t have great power ambitions. It has super power ambitions. It is neither inclined to become an American vassal nor is it deluded into believing that only a partnership with the US will somehow secure its borders with Occupied Tibet. It fights alone.
.@LisaCurtisDC your multiple premises in this article are deeply flawed. By purchasing Russian crude, India supports its economy, a move that is critical to countering China. By maintaining commercial and defense ties with Russia, India gives Russia a hedge against China.
The US has drained Indian military resources. The mess successive US regimes left in India’s backyard is toxic. When US trained/funded/armed Islamists from Af-Pak post Soviet withdrawal turned their guns on India, it ended in a multi decade insurgency that cost thousands of lives
The one thing decades of US foreign policy has proven to India is that any regime in Washington is temporary, unreliable and prone to supporting India’s adversaries - China and Pakistan. To try and turn the tables on an aware population that backs its government is foolish.
.@LisaCurtisDC, this should clear up any doubts.
