Social media has made a vast middle class in the information economy, and the information aristocracy ("experts") are pissed off.
Not just social media, tbc. Also the ability to cheaply, easily, and quickly research virtually anything and share information rapidly and freely. This is a seismic shift in the underlying bases of the economy and social and political power more disruptive than the Enlightenment.
Middle classes are always the enemies of the elite and aristocratic. They're highly stable socioeconomic phenomena that aren't easily exploited or pushed around. Biggest picture, this is what's going on.

The hardest part of this new era we're stepping into isn't the challenge of defeating the last tyrannical grasp of the dying order, as hard as that will be. It's realizing that many of the institutions of the older order actually are obsolete and figuring out what's needed now.
Don't let me understate the threat of this death grasp from the old powers. They have everything to lose and are thus extremely dangerous. They can easily plunge us into an entirely new Dark Age, possibly for a long time, with or without tyrannizing us severely for a long time.
