I analyzed over 1000 LinkedIn message sequences for you
Here's a THREAD ๐Ÿงต covering half of the top 10 best messages I found that'll make you money
Comment "send" on this post to get the breakdown for the other half DMed to you (must be following w/ DMs open)
Let's dig in:
Message 1: "saw you do {job function} for {abbreviated company name} (E.G. say Apple, not Apple Inc.)
Are you the person responsible for decisions about {category of solution you offer}"
Stats: 24.8% reply rate to message 1
40% reply rate w/ 1 followup
Message 2: "Would you ever consider ____?" (where ___ is the category of solution you offer)
E.G. Would you ever consider an automated content writer?
24.3% replied to message number 1
With two follow ups, this will bring our reply rate up to 40-50% for the sequence
Message 3: "Do you do X, or do you do Z"
E.G. "does a 3rd party manage your properties? Or do you manage them yourself?"
21.2% reply rate to message 1
Easy to answer, informs you about how to personalize your follow up
Message 4: "If I could help you {tangible outcome} per {time period}, would that be of interest to you?"
Before I messed with the campaign the reply rate was 27% for message 1 lol
Message 5: "Do you ever have ____ problem?" (that you solve)
After adding follow up messages the total sequence will get about a 35%-40% reply rate (I'll cover follow ups at the end)
Breaking down why these work and why I don't like automating super personalized messages with lots of placeholders
1. They're casual. The best LinkedIn DMs usually read like text messages you would send a colleague.
2. They're simple questions - easy to think of a reply to
Why they work part 2
3. They're not pushy - search "reactance jonah berger" in google
Trying to push someone do so something triggers defense mechanisms to make them shut down
Like leaving the room when an ad plays
Why they work part 3:
They don't sound automated
Sure, "hey {first_name}, saw you went to {college}, go {mascot!}. Also saw you're a {job title} at {company} doing {function} using {technology}" is personalized
But each placeholder's 1 more chance to mess up & it sounds robotic
Follow ups:
I send two follow up messages as a trend, spaced 6 days apart. I don't send messages on weekends.
Remember, it's networking site, not a sales site. You're here to HELP, not whine at them to hire you.
As such, the goal is to provide value + remind them you exist
Ways to provide value:
1. Memes (happiness)
2. case studies
3. Whitepapers
4. Useful posts relevant to them
5. Socialize like a normal human being (I.E. "Hey {first_name}, how have you been liking it at {company}" sent to changed jobs past 90 days folks found with "spotlights"
The break-up message:
In email marketing a lot of guys say something more intense to get a reply before they give up
I just say something like "So you never really face {problem you solve} then?"
You're just confirming they're not relevant - if they are, keep following up
To get a breakdown of the other top 5 messages that are working for me comment send on the original post (& retweet if you don't mind)
Then check your DMs - if you didn't get it, it's because you don't follow me or your DMs are closed - if not, DM me
And yes, in aware you can get higher reply rates with more sophisticated personalization.
To me it makes zero sense from a cost/benefit perspective but to each their own
