Men, for those who struggle with addiction, This is how you hack your brain to break a habit ;
Brother, you are an object in motion. Laws of physics dictates you will not come to rest until you face some amount of resistance or friction. Your habits are an infinite loop. You will not break them unless you make a conscious attempt resist and break them. Burn this to memory.
There are two irrefutable requirements to break a habit. Desire and belief. You MUST have an irresistible desire to become a better YOU & a resolute belief that you will succeed come what may. Use your emotions, disgust at self, guilt, rage, fear.. all work in your favor
Find the head of the snake. All habits begin with seeking pleasure but turn dark when you use it to escape pain. What are you trying to escape? Use first principles thinking. Ask WHY until you get to the bottom of it.
Learn the components. Identify the triggers that spark your thought patterns, Identify your routines that lead you to the same behavior, Identify the false sense of fulfillment you get on acting out. Only with hyper awareness will you beat a habit
To break a habit, first break the routine. Do you smoke at lunch? Skip lunch for 2 weeks. It won't kill you. Socialize during cigarette breaks? Avoid. All smokers want to quit. They will admire you or hate your guts for having the balls to quit. Don't care, do it anyway
➼ Why am i doing this?
➼ What do I get out of this?
➼ What will I lose because of this?
➼ What will I gain if I stop this?
Replace the reward in your head. You relapse because you value the dopamine greater than your desire to quit. You need to fix this first. Reprogram.
Take a rubber band and wrap it around your wrist. Snap the band whenever you feel the trigger or crave to indulge in your habit. A short tinge of pain will immediately re focus your attention. This is very effective to prevent going into thought patterns and rationalizations.
Your willpower has a limited amount of energy every day. It's called Ego depletion. Over-exerted, it becomes hard to control your impulses. Like an overworked muscle, needs rest to grow stronger. Simple, work on one habit at a time. Build systems for when you feel weak willed
Create simple If- Then plans. Identify the scenario that usually triggers your bad habit. Specify a different response to the trigger. Combine steps 1 and 2. If I crave to watch pornography, I will do 20 push-ups instead. Crave a drink? Go for a run instead. Simple Redirection.
Meditate twice a day. Be relaxed. Stress spikes cortisol and makes you use your drug as a coping mechanism. Concentrate on the task at hand. Don't let your mind wander or be bored. Idleness leads to relapse. Be vigilant, let cravings come. Don't act. Let them pass.
This journey doesn't have to make you feel weak. Seek strength in any shape or form. Work out, pray, read, friends, family - anything that makes you feel strong and supported. Interact with close friends and family to get your mind off the constant pangs of cravings.
You aren't the first person to embark on this journey. Millions have done it successfully. Study them, read about them, immerse yourself in it. See what worked for them, adopt it, improve upon it. Build a concrete system that works for your personality.
Most habits are like cockroaches hard to kill - not impossible. With the right tools and mindset you can get started. But, persistence will take it to conclusion. Your resolve and desire to quit will be tested here. Reaffirm why you want to quit.
Your cravings are most powerful at the start. Be smart now. Play for time. Trick your mind to ride out the withdrawal period. Distract yourself, create something, immerse in a hobby. All you have to do is wait it out. You are essentially starving the habit
You can distract yourself, change the environment, and use lots of strategies, but the only real, long-term solution to changing behavior is to find other behavior that you care about that will supersede the old behavior – new, enduring, engaging passions.
