What do the Prelims trends look like after Prelims 2022?
Distribution of Prelims Qs for last 4 Prelims ๐Ÿงต
Basic breakdown of GS1 paper
โ€ข Conceptual Qs - 28
โ€ข Factual Qs - 72
(Give or take a few)
As compared to 43 conceptual and 57 factual in 2021.
Total Questions/Subject
The bottom three are Ancient/Medival/Modern.
Modern history is declining in importance relative to the other two. Can't afford to ignore them anymore.
At the same time, it's difficult to cover those areas due to their vast nature. Low effort-reward ratio here.
Focus on high output subjects:
โ€ข Economy
โ€ข Polity
โ€ข S&T
โ€ข Maps
These have a limited syllabus & thus better effort-reward ratio.
Conceptual Questions
Took a deep dive from 2020-21 highs.
This was for all subjects.
Does that mean you ignore the basics?
Not at all.
UPSC is asking a lot more facts, but in the high output subjects these revolve around basic concepts.
If your basics aren't clear you won't remember the facts either.
Factual Questions
Just like concepts took a deep dive, factual questions took a steep up turn.
What does that mean?
Current affairs is king.
Not the PT365 kind, the reading newspaper kind.
Ignore the newspaper (and Modiji's travels) at your own peril! ๐Ÿคฃ
Cutoff Predictions
Institute predictions vary widely.
โ€ข Insights/IASbaba: 80-85
โ€ข Byjus: 90-95
Who is right? We won't know till April 2023.
What should you do?
If you've above 80, start planning for Mains.
Result should be out before the end of this month.
You'll have 14 weeks to prepare for Mains, if you start now. 11-12 if you start working after the result comes out.
3 weeks can mean an extra 30-40 marks in Mains.
In the final list, that means going from AIR 500+ to under 100
Meanwhile, Unacademy pulled a sneaky on me
Promised to give me cutoff if I logged in, but this is what I got instead. ๐Ÿคฃ
