Rasulullah’s visit to Ta’if:
When Rasulullah SAW called the people to Islam in Makkah, he was opposed by the leaders of the tribes of Quraysh. The Prophet SAW was ridiculed and those who converted to Islam were persecuted and tortured. The people of Quraysh boycotted the
Muslim as for 3 yrs and the Muslims suffered from sickness, hunger, and poverty. In the same year, Rasulullah lost his two strongest supporters and sources of comfort, his wife, Khadijah, and his uncle, Abu Talib.. Left without protection in Makkah, it became very difficult for
him to remain in Makkah. It was the first time in 10 years that he had ever thought of leaving Makkah. So he (SAW) decided to go to Ta’if. Ta’if was a natural choice because it was a twin city of makkah, both cities also knew each other from family to family so it was easier to
be accepted. So he and Zayd ibn Harith walked to Ta’if to invite its people to Islam quietly so as not to arouse suspicion, and to also not appeal to be cutting off ties with the people of Makkah. It was a difficult journey, as the city of Ta’if is an area of high mountains.
It is a lush area of green palm trees, fruits, and vegetables about 50 miles southeast of Makkah. Its temperatures are lower than Makkah but getting there was not easy. Upon arrival, the first thing he did was meet the city’s local leaders. He presented his message to the chiefs
of the Thakif tribe, who were three brothers. Then, he invited them to Islam. All three of them rejected the invitation and responded in the most sarcastic way.Although saddened by what they said, the Prophet SAW did not give up or lose hope. He told them that “although you have
rejected my request, you should please not tell the Quraish that I was here”
Some authentic reports suggest that he spent almost a week in Ta’if after this meeting calling its people to Islam from markets to other places. Nobody in Ta’if accepted his call. However, towards the
end of his stay, some people seemed ready to accept his invitation and convert to Islam. The leaders of Ta’if started to panic. They were infuriated by this news. They sent a mob of young people to attack the Prophet and pelt him with stones. Zayd tried to protect him to no avail
Unfortunately, the attack succeeded. The mob forced Rasulullah and Zayd out of town. Both men were wounded by the stones thrown at them, and their feet and sandals were covered in blood. They walked for around 8 kilometers in a state of trauma from what had happened. Outside
Ta’if, they reached a garden with trees where they sat to rest and recover from the shock. It was there that Prophet Muhammad said his famous supplication to Allah:
To You, my Lord, I complain of my weakness, lack of support, and the humiliation I am made to receive.
Most Compassionate and Merciful, You are the Lord of the weak, and You are my Lord. To whom do You leave me? To a distant person who receives me with hostility? Or to an enemy You have given power over me? As long as you are not displeased with me, I do not care what I face.
I would, however, be much happier with Your mercy. I seek refuge in the light of Your face by which all darkness is dispelled and both this life and the life to come are put in their right course against incurring your wrath or being the subject of your anger. To You I submit,
until I earn Your pleasure. Everything is powerless without your support.”
This powerful and beautiful supplication is a reminder that dua is the weapon of a believer. Rasulullah wasn’t complaining about the happening, he was scared that Allah was angry at him and then went
ahead to seek for ease if that’s not the case.
Allah immediately responded to the Prophet’s supplication and two things happened.
The garden belonged to Utbah ibn Rabiah (a fellow Quraishi and a distant cousin).
They had witnessed what happened in Ta’if and felt sorry for
him, so they sent him some grapes with their servant- a young man, Addas, who was a Nazirite (a believer in Jesus as a prophet from God).
The Prophet accepted the gift. Before eating the grapes, he said out loud, “Bismillah” (In the Name of Allah). These words attracted the
attention of Addas, he said that people here didn’t use these words. Rasulullah asked him where he was from. Addas answered that he was from Nineveh (a city in Iraq).
The Prophet (PBUH) smiled and asked:
You belong to the city of the righteous man Jon ah, son of Matthew
(Yunus ibn Matta)?
Addas said, “Yes.” He was astonished by the question, as the Arabs did not know of Jonah.
Thereupon Rasulullah said: He is my brother. He was a prophet and so am I.
Addas kissed the hands and feet of Rasulullah. Then he returned to his masters. When he
returned to his masters, they asked him why he did what he did and he said “oh my masters no one is better than he is for he told me things that only a prophet could know” and they said to him “he has bewitched you from your religion. They later tried to force addas to fight
Rasulullah in Badr which he refused and his two masters later met their death in Badr.
Following this incident and this beautiful supplication, Rasulullah & Zayd continued their journey back home. Angel Gabriel came to him at a place before Makkah called Qarn Al-Manazil & said:
Allah has heard what your people say to you and how they reject you. He has ordered the angels of the mountains to obey whatever you tell them to do.”
The angel of the mountains greeted him and said:
“Send me to do what you wish. If you wish, I will crush them between the two
mountains of Makkah.”
The Prophet (PBUH) said:
No don’t do this, Rather, I hope that Allah will bring forth from their loins those who will worship Allah alone and not associate anything with Him. (Al-Bukhari)
The Prophet SAW could have asked that those children who pelted
him with stones be finished off. He could have asked the same for their intolerant parents. But he didn’t! He never took revenge for himself. Rather, he was a mercy to the world and only wanted the guidance and what was best for his people.
On their way back, Rasulullah and Zayd
camped in a small village known as Nakhla and as was his habit, he stood up to pray tahajjud at night and Something happens. His wounds had not yet healed, he was in the middle of a long, arduous journey after being harshly stoned and expelled by the people of Ta’if, it was the
middle of the night in a cold, dark desert and yet the prophet Muhammad SAWstill did not give up his tahajjud. And to think that many of us modern Muslims can barely keep up with our fardh. Allah Himself tells us in Surah Al-Ahqaf, as no man could have witnessed it. Sura Ahqaf 29
“And when we caused a group of Jinn to pass by you, listening to the Qur’an. And when they were in your presence they said, “Quiet! Listen.” And when you finished, they went back to their people as warners”. Allah caused a group of Jinn to pass by the prophet when he was doing
tahajjud. And when the world of men rejected him and his message, the world of the unseen. the world of the Jinn stopped dead in its tracks and became silent to listen to him. And when he was finished, not only did those Jinn become Muslim, but they also became warners, showing
that they were like messengers to their own people bringing the news of Islam back with them. That night is known as laylatul Jinn
When he left the city for the 10 day journey to Ta’if and back, it signified to the Quraish that he had turned his back on them and essentially
accepted his fate as being exiled. And so if the prophet returned now, he would have no protection like he did, and so would be at the mercy of all of his enemies in the Quraish. So Zayd (RA) asked him, ‘O Rasulallah, how are we going to enter Mecca now that you have been
expelled from it?’
And the prophet replied, ‘O Zayd, Allah will make a way out for us, and Allah will help his prophet and make his message supreme.’
From here he began to send messages to a few members of the Quraish he felt would be somewhat sympathetic to his situation, in
order to gain their protection. And the first of these was Al-Akhnas ibn Shurayq – one of the leaders of the sub-tribes – however he sent a response back saying he was not in a position to provide protection to him. The next person was Suhail ibn Amr, who also responded with
weak excuse essentially refusing the prophet protection. However the third person that the prophet contacted was Mut’im ibn ‘Adi, and as we know he was the leader of the Banu Nawfal. Now Mut’im didn’t just send a messenger back; he went to his four sons and told them to arm
themselves. And he told them go to the prophet and provide an armed escort for his entrance back into Mecca, and to bring him straight back to himself. They went out of Makkah and brought the prophet into Makkah where mutim A met the prophet at the Kahbah, and allowed him to do
tawaf (as he knew the prophet began everything with tawaf), and when he was done he stood up and declared, ‘O people of Mecca, I have given my protection to Muhammad.’On hearing this, Abu Sufyan stood up and asked, Are you giving your protection as his follower or are you just
‘giving him protection?’ And when Mut’im replied that he was simply giving protection, Abu Sufyan ruled, ‘In that case we shall accept it.’ And so the prophet was allowed to enter back into Mecca through Mut’im ibn ‘Adi and the mercy of Allah. And so Rasulullah remained in the
protection of Mut’im who will pass away after a year or so before Allah created another way which was migration to Madinah. When asked what his most difficult day as a prophet was by Aisha RA, Rasulullah responded that the most difficult day in his life was in Ta’if.
