Thailand recently legalized Cannabis, becoming the first country in Asia to do so.
Whilst recreational use is theoretically banned, in actuality, it's in full swing! With full dispensaries, online stores and popup shops everywhere.
Here's a ๐Ÿงต from someone on the ground ๐Ÿ‘‡
CNN, AP and various other outlets reported that whilst Thailand had legalized cannabis, but recreational and public use would get you tough prison sentences.
And that only 0.2%+ THC could be sold.
Both of these are still NOT true.
Currently, there is a legal grey area for cannabis where there isn't even a set age limit - The cannabis stores and dispensaries have actually put self-imposed 18+ bans in place.
You can buy ANY flower product, but extracts are still illegal and public use will land you a fine.
There is a potential to get 3 years in prison for SOME public use cases - e.g. in front of Royal or government buildings.
That being said, a judge is still very unlikely to throw anyone in prison for any other sort of public use case.
You can already buy high potency, THC weed online and in fact, another Thai local Mr @mattdiggityseo recently invested in Bloom.Express which was originally launched as a CBD brand but has very quickly moved to become a fully functional online dispensary.
In celebration of the legalization, a massive event called the Thailand Legalaew aka "Highland" was organized which saw vendors, growers, government officials and entrepreneurs meetup to learn and grow - Excuse the pun.
Unfortunately, I couldn't attend the event but I did have several friends who did.
Here are some of the pictures they took:
Outside of the major cities, and especially in the more rural areas nothing has changed, yet.. Though I have heard a lot of stories of people setting up their own grows.
And the interest for Cannabis Seeds online went from nonexistent to exploding as the law came in overnight.
Inside the major cities, and specifically in Bangkok, there's a gold rush going on.
Every vendor I speak to is sold out or is only doing in-shop sales, which are charging hand over fist for the product.
In central Bangkok, you can expect to pay 500b - 1200b per/g ($15 - $35)
It's unlikely the price gauging with go down, and growers are also making the most out of the situation.
There are many illegal growers that have suddenly come out of the shadows with gigantic farms.
A "Dr. Greenthumb" is one of the most well-known, so far.
Thai lawmakers were slow to react to the bill passing & so far only the younger politicians looking to get some social media points have been very vocal.
The Governor of Bangkok reported a marijuana death on his FB page, which was quickly laughed off by tens of thousands.
In terms of the legalities, basically every police chief in the country has come out saying they will no longer be enforcing any sort of action against cannabis.
Even the infamous Thonglor police chief, who is known for being notoriously ruthless and conservative.
