Chitragupta is the one who must keep track of our acts and report to Yama when we die. Brahma's son is Chitragupta.

All stories in ancient Indian texts must be interpreted in philosophical terms. Chitragupta is a lovely allegory. Secret Images are how the word is rendered. What is the location of the drawings, and why is it kept a secret?
It is recorded within us whenever we sense anything, think, speak, or do something. It may stay in our conscious awareness for a while before moving into our subconscious. These records are kept in our heads, and these recordings are referred to as Chitra.
It's classified as secret or Gupta because it's carried out by something within us (call it subconscious if you insist) without our knowledge.
Chitra Gupta is believed to report these records to Yama. This signifies that it is time to access these records and play them again at the time of death.
We've heard accounts of people's "near-death experiences," in which they asserted that when they were "near-death," all of their life's events flashed before them like a repeat of some recording.
Where did these recollections come from? And why only in "near-death" situations? Why couldn't these people access these memories when they were still alive and well?
The allegory of Chitra Gupta maintaining a record and reporting to Yama brilliantly explains these recordings within us of all our thoughts, words, and acts that will be played back to us during the time of death.
