Are Food Shortages Coming?
I don’t know… but costs are rising
9 Foods to Stock Up On Now to Temper Inflation:
1/Food costs have been going up ⬆️ with no signs of going down ⬇️
Every week people are getting a sticker shock at the grocery store
Milk (+16%)
Eggs (+32%)
Butter (+20%)
Chicken (+17%)
Ground Beef (+13%)
May had the largest increase so far
2/Here are tips to economize and improve your food efficiency.
Efficiency options…
Low time, but higher $.
Economy options…
Low $, higher time.
Let’s talk about how to knock 10-20% off your grocery bill for the next few months.
3/Chicken:
Efficiency: Bulk Buy boneless, skinless breasts, and stock your freezer
Economy: Buy whole chickens; break down into breasts, and legs, save the bones and now you have:
-white meat
-dark meat
-and bones for stock
Wrap in tightly plastic & foil before freezing.
4/Beef:
Efficiency: Search for “reduced for quick sale” in your meat department; they often have even if not advertised
Find them, buy & freeze for on-demand use
Economy: Buy in bulk and break down. Whole shoulders, larger roasts etc, can all be cut down and frozen.
5/beef cont
If you have plenty of freezer space:
Buy 1/2 a cow from a local farm and freeze.
Rice:
Earth’s most plentiful grain with so many varieties!
I keep 6 kinds of rice on hand for short-med-long use.
6/rice cont
Efficiency: Stockpile larger bags of medium-grain rice like Goya to have for all purpose use
Economy: Go to your local Mid. East/Asian Market and get the 20lb bags (Basmati or Jasmine rice)
Aged Basmati is a fave and the higher cost is canceled out if you buy bulk
7/Beans:
Legumes are essential!
Efficiency: Stock up on large cans (Costco or Restaurant Supply). These have years of shelf life.
The downside is…
They must be rinsed before use ❌
They take up more space in your pantry❌
8/beans cont
Economy: Good ol’ dried beans
The large bags are easy to store. I’m a sucker for Cuban Black Beans… and dropped the best recipe ever last year in a Substack
Soak these overnight the day before and they last a long time. The pressure cooker makes quick work of them
9/
Lentils:
Lentils are underrated & chock full of protein. Big bags at Mid East markets
If you’re not familiar with cooking them, free Substack detailing all the varieties, + quick & easy recipe "Bloomberg Lentils™️"
*Red & yellow lentils cook faster than black & Le Puy
10/
IQF Fish:
IQF fish is many times the higher quality and more affordable than going to your local grocery fish counter.
Grocery store fish have usually been frozen then thawed❌
Efficiency: Get pre-portioned fish like Ahi Tuna, Mahi, Salmon, Steel Trout, and Flounder.
11/fish cont
Stock these in your freezer and pull them out the day before to thaw in your fridge. Quick and Easy
Economy: If you have good fish monger. Buy, breakdown whole fish at home and salt or cold smoke certain types. Make broth with the bones, then freeze portions/filets
12/
Canned Tomato:
🍅 are essential in many cuisines from 🇮🇳 Curry to 🇮🇹 Pasta
There’s no economy vs efficiency with these guys. If you can get the #10 cans of whole or crushed tomatoes at wholesale or bulk clubs. That will be the cheapest
As for brands? Check my substack
13/
AP Flour:
All-purpose flour is one of the most used ingredients for baking, bread, pasta, or even dredging & pan-frying
With shelf life of up to 8 months you can get bags up to 50lbs that will have you stocked for a long time. King Arthur is a good brand/widely available
14/
Oils:
Oil prices shot up last month. Get jugs of Olive Oil and other healthy fats in bulk to nip future price raises in the bud.
Not sure where to start? I wrote 2 free substacks on Olive Oils and Healthy Fats. Avoid seed oils, you get plenty eating out.
15/
This may seem daunting but taking a few mins to plan ahead and saving $$$ doesn’t have to be stressful…
Mid. East & Asian groceries continue to be great value places with good ingredients.
All of the above will help you shave meaningful $ off your grocery bill
