I don’t understand how so many yuppy NYC families live in this city.
So expensive!
Here’s my somewhat uneducated guess:
- $3m-$7m home. ~2000 sqft in nyc, 3000 in Brooklyn. Enough for 2-3 kids. $8k-30k month.
- taxes. ~52% income, mortgage tax (~1%), prop tax (10k-60k year)
- parking (600 month)
- nanny/childcare ( I imagine both parents have to work). $30-60k year.
- HOA (if apartment) $20k-40k year
These numbers are guesses. Divide or multiply by 2.
But imagine you need $1m-2m a year income + 7 figure down to buy.
And keep in mind, on 1m in income, you take home like $450k.
I imagine a lot of families spend 300-500k a year!
I’m sitting here at the Madison Park. Tons of kids and parents. Amazing!
Now, don’t @ me with this bullshit:
- you don’t have to spend that!
- who needs that!
- but NYC is cool!
- who’s does that! NYC sucks!
- most people don’t do that
Because:
- many spend this. And more. That’s the point. It’s wild. Not good or bad, but interesting!
- I get why they do. Unique way to raise family.
- likely earn more here
All I’m saying is, logistically, it’s interesting.
Tons of young families (parents 40 years old) making 1-2m and spend lots of it.
The hundreds of people at this park just each have a cool story.
Btw if I wanted to live here (and didn’t care about costs), it’d be in Cobble Hill in Brooklyn. That’s where I rent while I’m in NY.
A nice $6m home. Check out the monthly expenses. Wow!
