An analysis of furuta’s quote
First off, I would like to say that the quote itself is very much intepretational due to how many things it connects to in the series so I would rather list them off one by one. On a very surface level, it is simply referencing furuta’s state within the world as a caged bird
The interesting part is that at this point it’s explicitly confirmed that the birdcage is broken. So what birdcage is furuta referring to here? The birdcage of life itself: death. This is in line with furuta’s plan with the dragon to destroy death which ultimately failed
Making his actions meaningless as well as his impending death due to his fight with kaneki. What makes this even more interesting is that despite furuta referring to himself as a bird. Within the series, rinkaku kangunes are associated with snakes while ukaku are birds. This act
As characterization for his inability to ever fly as he must always crawl on the ground. It’s no surprise the last dragon was also referred to as the snake king as furuta acts as the embodiment of the dragon itself- infinite chaos that only brings death. He is also heavily
Paralleled to the last one eyed king as they are both washuu one eyed ghouls who rebelled agaisnt society and ended up dying underground. I am also of the belief that this is why furuta’s confirmed age was 24 to match the underground ward. This is why I tend to calm furuta
The true one eyed king, after all his name as the washuu king was based on the last king. This characterization depicts furuta as someone unable to change history. Destined to always repeat it no matter how his efforts. Similarly to his mole on his eye which symbolizes a hard
Life showing that he could never escape his short lifespan no matter what he does. The second meaning of this panel is a reference to the other bird in the basket within the series. Eto yoshimura. It’s no surprise eto “comes out” during the same chapter. It gives insight into
Furuta’s plan from the get go. He was always aiming to betray V. He did not tell them about the white suits because he needed the white suits to aid his betrayal. And he made donato purposefully control eto instead of using the quinque material because this way once donato dies
Off, eto can come out to attack V. With this we realize something. Furuta LET naki live. He never planned to eliminate the white suits. In fact he most probably aided in their recovery to help betray V. We can see that there were even ppl still alive at the base. Anyways onto the
Next part. “Kagome kagome” refers to a song and a game. It acts as characterization towards furuta’s cryptic nature but as you can see, each theory can be applied to him in a certain way. Whether it’s a convict waiting to executed or a prostitute(just like his mother was forced
Into being a birthing machine). It adds into furuta’s characterization as a devil(similarly to the oni in the game) but also his way of seeing life as game as he is ultimately a child deep down. To him the world itself is the kagome kagome game. However, the biggest detail is
His drawing on the wall. A while back, I considered the possible intepretation that it’s possible that furuta is aware that he’s in a fictional world and it’s what contributes to his insanity as well as overall hatred of the world. While I’m not going to prove it completely here
I’ll give an example of an instance that showcases this. The drawing on the wall is the sound effect of the manga. Funnily enough, it’s an effect that pops up during furuta’s fight with kaneki. To make this intepretation more nuanced I’ll also show this other page where furuta
Cuts open the panels of the manga after which kaneki blocks the escape route and kicks away the machine capable of such. And with that we get a whole new interpretation. Furuta’s birdcage is the manga ITSELF. He’s trapped within it. He’s constrained within the panels. He sings
Knowing he can never produce any form of noise. He even SEES the the sound effects itself. Imagine the amount of mental deterioration he’s going through. Seeing words pop up in the air every single moment of the day and being squished into panels for every single instance of your
Life. This is furuta’s dilemma which he can only find some semblance of escape through death. Because no matter what he does he can never break away from the manga. He will always be a character and never a real person. His actions are always meaningless no matter what he does.
This is also why I think furuta dies within the manga while Kaneki’s future is left intepretational. Furuta’s life is ultimately decided from start to finish as he could never escape his fate while kaneki crafts his own life. Before I end this thread, I would like to say that
It is very much purposeful that the world seems to “improve” after furuta’s death as he planned it. His entire character arc is to restrict the birdcage on himself in order to break the birdcage on the world. Anyways end of thread👨🏾‍🍳
I would also like to point out that furuta is laughing at himself lol. Because he did the same thing to other ppl and is realizing it just got done to him. It’s like a self depreciative form of comedy.
@Ayu206065043 Luckily I already had an extremely detailed furuta analysis which I just edit from time to time in order to make it easier to read/digest as well as giving important information. My friend @InoReviews has a very good kaneki analysis though on his insta highlights so check
@Ayu206065043 @InoReviews Him out. If I ever get motivation I could write some aspects on kaneki but I really do not know when that would happen
@vincent5126 To fail. And even worse fail by the direct core of his plans(kaneki and Kano). Even worse that he lost due to something as silly as remembering that he wanted a normal life. So to him it’s like “wow everythung I did led up to this moment and it all failed because of me”
