On the Soul of the Universe (Aš§µ) "The Pythagoreans declared arithmetic to be the mother of the mathematical sciences. This is proved by the fact that geometry, music, and astronomy are dependent upon it but it is not dependent upon them."
"The Pythagoreans also demonstrated arithmetic to be prior to astronomy, for the latter is dependent upon both geometry and music. The size, form & motion of the celestial bodies is determined by the use of geometry; their harmony and rhythm by the use of music." - Manly P. Hall
Pythagoras defined number to be the extension and energy of the generative reasons contained in theĀ Monad. The God of Pythagoras was theĀ Monad, the āOne that is Everythingā and was represented by a circle.
Just as all polygons come from a circle & all polyhedra come from a sphere, everything in reality comes from theĀ Monad, āthe Supreme Mind distributed throughout all parts of the Universe ā the Cause of all things, the Intelligence of all things, and the Power within all things.ā
According to Plato, the Universe was created according to a system of musical harmonies. The Demiurge took two āstripsā of reality, one made from the even numbers & the other from odd numbers, & joined them together in the form of a giant Χ, bending them around to form a sphere.
This X was the World Soul. Plato claims that the soul is made from two parts, the indivisible & divisible, or āthe nature of the same & otherā. Sameness & Difference are the two qualities of the soul, but any two properties can only be joined by means of a third āthe Essence".
Plato states that the Cosmic Soul was created using two mathematical strips of 1, 2, 4, 8 & 1, 3, 9, 27. These two strips follow the shape of an inverted āVā or the Platonic Lambda since it resembles the shape of the 11th Greek Letter āLambda".
"He took one portion from the whole (1)& next a portion double the first (2)Ā a third portion half again as much as the second (3)Ā the fourth portion double the second (4)Ā the fifth three times the third (9)Ā the sixth eight times the first (8)Ā & the seventh 27 times the first(27)"
This gives us the seven integers; 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 27. These contain the Monad, the source of all numbers, the first even & first odd, and their squares and cubes. These were broken up into Two Series and arranged like the Greek Letter Lambda. The Two Series:
1,2,4,8
1,3,9,27
The Soul of the Universe is the sum of the two series:
Sum of the double interval series (powers of 2)= 20+21+22+23=1+2+4+8= 15
Sum of the triple interval series (powers of 3) = 30+31+32+33=1+3+9+27= 40
Sum of the double & triple interval seriesĀ =15 + 40 =Ā 55 Cosmic Soul = 55
Pythagorean swore a Vow on the Tetractys. From the Tetractys, we get the number 10. 1+2+3+4= 10 55 is the 10th Triangular Number. If you add up, all the integers one through ten, the sum is equal to 55.
"There are 5 heavenly numbers & 5 earthly numbers. When they are distributed among the five places, each finds its complement. The sum of the heavenly numbers is 25, the sum of the earthly numbers is 30. The sum total of heavenly numbers & earthly numbers isĀ 55." - I Ching
Dante scatters the word "Star" 55 times in his Commedia, and uses the Platonic Lambda's number 55 as a vehicle for the soul's ascent to the stars. Was Dante an initiate of the Ancient Mysteries? It would seem so. š§µ š
