As expected, Syria is fast becoming a flashpoint between the US and Russia. Assad’s MB opposition is regrouping (with Qatar/US help?) While Assad is unlikely to lose control, he may push civilians from opposition strongholds out towards Europe with Russian military assistance.
The IS threat in the region clearly hasn’t abated. It’s only got reinforced post-Afghanistan. Some IS factions and AQ work against the US. Others would seek retribution against Russia for their shock and awe campaign that broke their back in Syria. This can get quite messy.
Millions of Syrians face hunger. Meanwhile, the UN World Food Program is limiting their food assistance as of July due to a shortage of funds. On top of the chaos in the region and heightened risk of proxy wars in the region, the probability of another refugee crisis has risen.
