DELETED: "A Dalit is likely to be confined to.. scavenging..."
"..women & shudras not allowed to study Vedas"
The 2nd part of our investigation on the revised school textbooks 📚 focuses on the key deletions on caste, discrimination & minorities

.@IndianExpress scrutinised 21 history, pol science & sociology textbooks for Classes 6 to 12 to find that deletions included several examples of discrimination faced by lower castes & minorities, which were introduced in 2007 to “build a sense of a just society”.
(2/n)
For instance, the section on 'varnas' in the Class 6 history textbook is reduced by HALF.
Sentences on the hereditary nature of varnas, & rejection of the varna system have been removed.
(3/n)
A mention of women & shudras not being allowed to study the Vedas in ancient India has been dropped from a section on the “Puranas” in a chapter in the Class 6 history textbook.
(4/n)
A passage from social activist Harsh Mander’s book ‘describing the ordeal of a Dalit manual scavenger, is also out.

Some deletions seem very selective & don't fit (NCERT's) motive of recovering "learning setbacks" suffered during Covid.
Eg 1: A box describing a common stereotype about Muslims that they are not interested in educating girls, & why this is far from the truth, has been deleted
Eg 2: Sentences on how minorities “must face the risk that the majority community will capture political power & use the state machinery to suppress their religious or cultural institutions…” have been DROPPED.
(6/n)
A reference to the “resurgence & newly acquired political power of the Hindu communalists” & how this makes it harder to settle disagreements over steps taken by the govt to protect minorities is also OUT.
(7/n)
The (above) examples of discrimination faced by Dalits & minorities were introduced in the NCERT textbooks in 2007 as part of a new pedagogical approach that was meant to demonstrate "the functioning of democracy in people's lives" & "build a sense of a just society" in students.
The first part of our investigation (out yesterday) focused on changes made to content related to contemporary India 🇮🇳
The most significant of them was the deletion of references to the 2002 Gujarat riots from TWO textbooks.
