Use this method to make habits insanely easier to build.
//Thread//
For various reasons most people have a hard time forming new habits.
One of the reasons being the habit isn't cemented firmly in reality.
It's a habit you "want" to build, but haven't yet managed to, so excuses against doing it are more detrimental.
Enter the X-Effect method:
1) Get a 4x6 index card and draw 6 vertical lines intersecting 6 horizontal lines.
This will create a 7x7 grid of 49 squares.
Each square represents 1 day.
Each index card is for one new habit only.
You can do multiple cards at a time, but I recommend starting with 1.
2) On the back of the card, write a few reasons why you want to build this habit.
These are your reminders for why you're doing this, why you've decided to take this journey.
You can add more reasons as you go, but have a few to start.
They will be your light in the dark.
3) Get a big red marker.
Every day you perform your new habit, put a satisfying BIG red X over that square.
The important part is to start small, even if it's just 5 minutes towards your habit, it counts.
Read about No zero-days here:
This is the essence of the X-effect method.
You're cementing your new habit into reality and creating a visual reminder of your progress.
Remember: Start small, we're entirely focused on building the habit for now.
The gains come later.
Now, what if you mix an X? Read on:
1) No double blank squares.
Everyone will inevitably miss an X eventually, shit happens.
Don't beat yourself up about it.
Feeling bad about it doesn't help you, instead focus on making sure you don't have 2 blank days in a row.
2) Reflect.
Mistakes are information.
Do some introspection and take notes.
Why did you miss your X?
What can you do to prevent it from happening again?
Learn your lesson and keep moving forward.
3) Forgive yourself.
It's already been said (multiple times), but it deserves its own section.
Seriously, Perfection. Does. Not. Exist.
Nothing is perfect, No One is perfect.
Including you.
Missed your X?
Learn from it, get over it, and move on.
That's the X-effect method, you can continue past day 49 and start a new card if you feel the need to.
The goal isn't to continue this forever, just until you feel like the habit is properly formed.
You'll know when.
Lastly: Make sure you really enjoy marking that big red X.
