@sriramhere @ThunderBearFire They do; but not at our whim & fancy. While it remains a choice to decide whether someone will follow it or not, we need to have a hard think about what is correct from our Dharma’s point of view.
@sriramhere @ThunderBearFire On an issue rife with grave moral weight like this, we should not reduce it to rights & throw the religious perspective under the bus.
@sriramhere @ThunderBearFire As a matter of principle, we should identify what our Gods, Scriptures & Sages have directed in this regard & any practical concerns should be reconciled with the former such that the former is honoured as far as possible.
@sriramhere @ThunderBearFire What many Hindus do today is regrettable. We never give any weight to what our own Devas, Śāstras, Ṛṣis or Ācāryas say. Even if it is a “mere” Dharmaśāstra, is a Ṛṣi’s opinion trivial anyway?
@sriramhere @ThunderBearFire For the purposes of discussion, let’s agree to this minimum:
1. That an exception can be made where the mother’s life is in danger; and
2. Abortion due to balātkāra should form a separate discussion.
@sriramhere @ThunderBearFire If we can agree to this, the majority of cases where someone gets pregnant due to their own volition do not warrant any exceptional treatment.
If you made a poor decision, you should not be awarded with the right to extinguish a life.
@sriramhere @ThunderBearFire We can be compassionate towards those who do not have the capacity to raise a child & discuss viable options: helping with adoption, or granting subsidies if the woman should decide to raise it anyway, etc.
@sriramhere @ThunderBearFire But we should not resort to killing a fetus or promote it by calling it a “right” when it is condemned as a horrid sin in our Śāstras.
@sriramhere @ThunderBearFire *does not warrant
