@sriramhere @ThunderBearFire I didn’t say anything about Dharmaśāstras being legally binding though.
And abortion being already legal is also not an issue here.
I would like to set out some additional points & counters to arguments (which may not be yours, just to clarify), for completeness. ++
@sriramhere @ThunderBearFire Even in a place where alcohol is legal & in fact celebrated, if the majority of adherents of a system that prohibits alcohol don’t touch it, that is the success of that system. +
@sriramhere @ThunderBearFire +We can’t take an aggressively individualistic approach to morality that throws our religion under the bus. Your Gods’ view of morality must have more value than a fallible human’s “personal” preference & we have a duty to at least advance that view as the right one.+
@sriramhere @ThunderBearFire + If morality can be reduced to “personal preferences”, then we don’t need religion at all. It means we have no serious conviction in our religion beyond what good it can do for us as an emotional support system. +
@sriramhere @ThunderBearFire +If the idea is that we need not fear sin or because these don’t have a place in our very pleasant Dharma, that’s simply not right.+
@sriramhere @ThunderBearFire +Our religion stands for the idea that there is something beyond this body of ours. The material body is very important but is not the be all & end all. We do have a rich account of the spirit & the consequences it faces for actions here.+
@sriramhere @ThunderBearFire +The least we can do is to make ourselves & fellow Hindus stand firm in this fundamental idea.+
@sriramhere @ThunderBearFire +If it’s that Xtians are pro-lifers & we ought to side against them, that’s wrong. Not saying that you are saying it, to clarify again. We ought to take our own Gods & Sages seriously & if it is similar to another group’s views, so be it.+
@sriramhere @ThunderBearFire +We don’t need to look at anyone else to defend the right view.
And even if we don’t want to go to the extent of securing legal effect for the right view, we ought to at least impress that view on members of our own faith. +
@sriramhere @ThunderBearFire + But if we don’t even have a basic conviction that our religion is a greater source of morality than our flawed, personal selves, then it’s clear that we don’t intend to accord our Gods & Sages any role in shaping our views. //End
