Youth Guidance
I woke up 45 minutes ago and in an unusual manner started taking an inventory of every value system that has carved me as a young man.
I'll demystify one of them in this thread hoping this helps any struggling young man out there.
Now, the time is 5:13 am (C.E.T)

Navigating life in itself is tough, tougher when you have to navigate it without the support that was promised.
A child transcends from a toddler, through his/her formative years into a teen, into a full blown adult in a, functional home so they have hands that guide.

But to have childhood snatched from you, teens-hood crunched up and responsibilities slung across your shoulder like a child solider in the Biafran war is the normalcy in many African homes, so was in mine.
I learnt the hard way, many things and I can say unequivocally...

Holding onto baggage will slow you down as a young man.
For many years, hate was my baggage and my father was the source.
Oh I hated him. I hated that he left me alone to dry when the young man in me needed an OG to help land his first girlfriend.

I hated that I would see my colleagues walk out of campuses to run into broader shoulders and warm embraces of their pops.
All I ever ran into more often than the devil bumps into the hearts of Igbo women was a responsibility that was a father to responsibilities before him.

Hate was my baggage. It slowed me down; it slowed me down emotionally.
I learnt very late how hate is too much a burden to bear; it injures the hater more than it injures the hated.
I'll raise you one.
Holding onto hate is like drinking poison and expecting the other to die.

As men, we're hardly sincere with ourselves about the state of our emotions but brother, it is more to your good than it is for others.
Take a note and scribble. Be unashamed. Be sincere.
Deliberately scribble down what defines baggage currently.
The question is what next?

3 years ago, I bumped into a book that exposed a tiny little detail in its prologue.
The mystery of the rear view mirror and the windshield.
That was the first day I learnt to deal with the hate I had carried many years heads on.
According to the manufacturer's spec...

If you drive, you'll know that there's a reason why the rear view mirror is a lot smaller than the windshield.
The reason is because what it holds in it's view is insignificant to your journey.
The rear view mirror only shows you what your journey has gone past. Lessons.

The rear view mirror only shows you what your journey has gone past. Lessons.
As you drive (progress), every image in the rear view morphs into minuscules.
The rear view mirror stops your lessons from catching up to you as long as you don't stop driving.
It reminds you of struggles you out-muscled.
I learnt to put my baggage in the rear view. I grew

Brother, your starting point is self realisation.
Acknowledge your baggage, identify it's source and put them where? In the rear view mirror.
The obstruction in the journey of men out there as it was in my journey is their baggage seats on their windshield.

The obstruction in the journey of men out there as it was in my journey is their baggage seats on their windshield.
And for every time your baggage sits on your windshield, you stand more chances of crashing.
The windshield holds the possibilities of your journey. Your future.
The rear view mirror shows you "how much you have"; the windshield shows you " how much you can"

Your windshield is your mind! You need to keep the wipers steady and the glass clean.
The realisation of this wisdom as spun my life.
It has wired me the effective healing process.
Not the woes of a relationship, the travails of childhood was a baggage worth my windshield

Make it a rule of thumb that nothing from your rear view mirror catches up to you.
It stays where it belongs. In the past, as a lesson.
I sat the childhood expectations that birthed my first baggage in my rear view mirror. As the days rolled into weeks, my hatred melted.

Staring at me in my windshield are possibilities. Possibilities of what I can be, not what I couldn't be or have.
Possibilities of the man and father I can choose to be,not the father I didn't get to experience.
Young man, you can define your journey.
It really is in your hands
