TYRELL MALACIA~ PLAYER ANALYSIS 🔥
Background
Tyrell Malacia is a 22 year old left-back who plays for Feyenoord in the Eredivisie. He has also made 5 caps for Netherlands.
His honours include a KNVB Cup in 17/18 and a Johann Cruyff Shield in 2018.
Strengths
• Pace
• 1 on 1 defending
• Press resistance
• Output in final 3rd
I will analyse these strengths and prove why he’s a great option for Ten Hag’s system below ⬇️
• Pace
Malacia is very quick, he does like to join the attacking 3rd and be an outlet for Feyenoord, however his recovery pace means that he’s a vital asset in defensive transitions.
This is hugely important for Erik ten Hag’s system, due to the expansive nature of the Dutchman’s philosophy, counter-attacks are a potential weakness.
Therefore, having speedy players with a good knack of stopping transitions is paramount.
• 1 on 1 defending
Malacia is very competent 1 vs 1 defensively. His pace does help him, however he rarely tends to get beaten 1 vs 1 and knows when to step in and challenge.
3 different scenarios:
• Press resistance
The Dutch player is very comfortable in possession and in tight spaces he has an excellent knack of retaining and progressing the ball.
However, there’s a really vital tactical point I’ve noticed with the full back. He is very comfortable in possession in more central areas as well as wide areas.
This is PERFECT for Erik ten Hag’s system when in the opposition half, the shape can often depict a 2-3-5.
This image via @coachdogge portrays the 2-3-5 in possession. In this example, the left back, Tagliafico is part of a front 5, the right back, Veltman, just behind on the right of a 3.
However the LB and RB could switch roles, thanks to the fluidity of ETH’s system.
For example, this image depicts Ajax in the attacking 3rd during a different game within the same season.
Tagliafico, Ajax’s left back is in possession, tucked into an inverted role and Veltman joins the front 5.
Positional rotations! So exciting and interesting under Ten Hag.
Something that Erik ten Hag requires is that his full backs are technical players, comfortable in both inverted and wider areas.
Malacia has the attributes necessary to perform this “inverted fullback” role, both on the ball through his technical ability and output…
And also off the ball due to his ability to stop transitions.
E.g. a comparison would be the role of the inverted full back in Pep’s City team, in a more central area and therefore more able to make a defensive contribution.
Danger in final 3rd:
• Output in final 3rd
The left back has a wand of a left foot and he is a huge threat in the final 3rd with both low and lofted crosses and cut backs.

However, Malacia is not just an explosive full back who can overlap, he also has a decent passing range and can break opposition lines from deeper areas.
I personally think Malacia would be a fantastic signing for Erik ten Hag. I’d expect Alex Telles to be offloaded as a result.
There is one main area where the Dutchman can improve, namely his defensive positioning. This is something ten Hag can develop. Only 22 years old!
Also, to sign him for an initial fee of only €15m would be exceptional business!
