I was talking to a friend abroad about my frustrations with my job. He listened carefully, then suggested, "why don't you just get a new job?". I know he meant well, but dear foreigners, let me tell you something about Africa out here you just don't get a job like you get candy.
In Africa, jobs are a miracle. There are churches dedicated to praying for people to get jobs. In America, you can decide to wait tables as you wait for a job. Out here, waiting a table is a job someone prayed & fasted for. That's why I just can't up & go as I wish.
Jobs are hereditary out here, man. You guys don't know how good you got it. You can wake up one day, decide, "Fuck it! I quit. Come what may". But you see, your 'come what may' is food stamps. Public housing. My "come what may" is death. Literally. Death. No one will feed you.
So, no, I can't just get a new job. It's not so simple. I know you mean well. You say, "but your mental health, T."
Yeah, it's mental health or starvation out here. There are no burger joints to take you in any time you want. People bribe to serve in restaurants. In cash & body

This is not a lamentation: it is context. There is a reason "get a job" is not banter in local African dialects. It is a sensitive topic. Out there, I could probably tell someone, "Get a job, man", & he'd laugh it off coz he can. Here, it can drive a man to tears. Context.
Sometimes I watch an American movie, & it's a man. And he's lost his job. He is devastated, doesn't know what he'll do. So, he heads back to his camper van, drives to a new city to start from scratch... as a store manager.😂 Something to do as he looks for a job😂
