What I still can't get over is how multiple generations of Germans repeatedly insisted on this over the pushback from their leaders. They held their politicians' feet to the fire to close the nuke plants (which were replaced w/ coal & Russian gas). Collective insanity.

I should note: if you're an American & you're laughing at this, take a moment to think about how the US moved the bulk of its industrial base to China over similar warnings about how if we ever went to war with them they'd have a kill switch on our civilization.
Though in the American public's defense, this bone-headed move was executed by technocrats over the objections of much of the population. So it wasn't quite bottom-up self-ownage like in Germany. But it was (probably catastrophic) self-ownage, nonetheless.
