Revisiting this from @Andy__Buck for some consolidation. My main takeaways below:
Leadership determines culture and climate which in turn determine effort, retention, and outcomes.
To create a positive culture - have shared values, importance of communication, show personal interest, support staff inc reducing workload, give both challenge & autonomy, be open & transparent, show appreciation, ensure excellent professional development.
- The importance of learning from criticism and using it to improve.
- Have a “rigorous focus on the school’s core business”.
- “Do the right thing rather then take the easy option”.
- The importance of moral purpose and wanting the best for staff & pupils
- It is the school’s context that determines its priorities and improvement approach.
- Use multiple sources of data here - outcomes, surveys to pupils, parents and staff, lesson drop ins, etc.
- QA should be used for development not measurement.
- Have to maintain focus and keep consistency in the most important areas of the school, whilst developing provision further.
- The key activity leaders should focus on is staff development.
- Ensure clarity by taking every opportunity to show your expectations/what is important to you.
- The importance of whole-school T&L principles, collaborative planning, a consistent approach to managing behaviour.
- To inspire others, show you value others, communicate ideas clearly, be honest and have integrity, be clear on your values, show your passion and enthusiasm.
- To develop trust character and competence are key
- The importance of identifying and nurturing other staff as future leaders.
- Retaining staff is key: recognise and value them, ensure positive working conditions and a positive/energetic culture, give development opportunities.
- For successful team meetings: pre-reading, clear agreed actions, pre and post meeting discussions.
- Difficult conversations should be have improved person.
- The main role of leaders is long-term change which is embedded.
A great book. Recommended for all school leaders. End!
