At the age of 16, he met with a severe accident. In this accident, his muscles were totally torn from his knee to toe. He received 22 stitches without anesthesia. At that time, he told his father -
β€œPAIN LIED IN THE BRAIN, NOT IN THE LEG”.

He was born on 28th Aug 1975 in Delhi to Shri S K Nayyar & Smt Meena Nayyar.
He finished schooling from Army Public School, Delhi in 1993 and got graduated from NDA (90th course) and was later commissioned into 17 JAT REGIMENT in June 1997.
He was about to get married on September 1999.
Before leaving for the peak 4875, he gave the engagement ring to his commander and said -
"Mohabbat ki amanat bahut bhari hoti hai, mai ise lekar nhi mar paunga.Agar mai vapis ni aaya to ye angoothi meri mangetar ko de dena."(Copied)
During Kargil War, he was promoted to Captain.
His unit's major operation was to capture Pt 4875, west of Tiger Hill.
His company commander Maj Ritesh Sharma got injured and was evacuated. Capt Nayyar, who was newly recruited to Captain, took over as the company commander.
After the initial setback, the assault team split into 2 groups, one led by Capt Vikram Batra and other by Capt Anuj.
During the battle, Capt Nayyar killed 9 Pakistani soldiers and destroyed 3 medium machine gun bunkers.
While clearing the 4th one, he was hit by a rocket grenade.
He succumbed to his injuries but not before clearing the last bunker on Pt. 4875. None of the soldiers from Capt Nayyar’s team of Charlie Company survived the battle.
After few hours, Pt 4875 was counter-attacked by Pak forces, but then team led by Capt Vikram Batra defended it.
He showed extreme courage and grit in the face of the enemy while leading from the front.
He was later awarded with Mahavir Chakra posthumously.
Tejbir Singh, a fellow soldier of his unit named his son Anuj in his honour.
