Is your LinkedIn profile helping you get referrals and job opportunities? Yes? No? If No, please read this thread 🧵and share with others!
2/ My LinkedIn profile has been getting me voluntary referrals and a lot of recruiter InMails that have led to interviews since 2020. In this thread, I talk about:
✨updating your profile pic, headline & other sections
✨mistakes to avoid
✨posting your work on LinkedIn
3/ After posting my 1st project on LinkedIn in Nov. 2020, I began to gain confidence to post more.
→ shared my projects and learnings.
→ connected each day with at least 10 data professionals in my region
→ actively engaged with posts
→ regularly updated my LinkedIn profile
4/ When I was pivoting to data science & analytics in 2021, I got 5 voluntary referrals (without asking) from employees in companies like Apple, LinkedIn, Scotia bank etc.. Got to chat with Hiring Mangers and some ended up with interviews. See from LinkedIn & Apple below >>
5/ Profile picture and header
• Have a clear professional looking headshot of yourself (your head to a few inches below your shoulders)
• You can take one with a good phone camera
• Remove and change background colour with @canva. They also have tons of templates for headers
6/ Headline
Make your headline sound “confident”. Do not use:
• multiple job titles (makes you appear confused) ❌
• words like “aspiring”, “enthusiast” or “newbie” ❌
Instead, use the job title you’re aiming for - Software Engineer, Data Analyst, Product Manager ✅
7/ Headline (contd)
• You can add other interests like Public Speaker, Volunteer at CodeCamp etc. ✅
• Look at headlines of professionals in your field ✅
8/ Experience section:
If you’re looking for a job, there is not reason why your experience section should not be detailed.
• Add at least 3 achievements in bullet points for your past roles.
• Use the “Did X using Y to get Z result” format.
9/ Skills & Recommendations
Probably the most underrated sections.
âś… Add relevant skills to your job profile
âś… LinkedIn uses this to match you to roles
âś… Ask your previous colleagues or friends to recommend you and endorse your skills
10/ Post!!
• One of the easiest ways to get noticed is by posting your projects or learnings on LinkedIn and your other social media.
• Projects go a long way in proving your skills to employers.
• Be active on LinkedIn and make meaningly connections with those in your field
11/ The End!
These were the Linkedin hacks that got me lots of referals that led to interviews. Update your LinkedIn. I’ll create a Twitter space on this soon.
If you need your profile reviewed by me, book a session with the link in my bio.
Have a great week đź’•
