How to boost your memory
Forgetting can be annoying especially when trying to learn a new skill or in a serious situation.
In this article, we discuss Ebbinghaus's Forgetting Curve, which shows how memories are lost over time and what we can do to remember the things that we learn.
What is the Forgetting Curve?
Psychologist, Hermann Ebbinghaus, shows how the things we learn fade over time.
According to him
- Memories weaken over time
- The biggest drop in knowledge happens moments after the new information is gotten
- It's easier to remember things that have meaning
- You remember things that are presented or organized clearly
- Stress makes it hard to remember
How to prevent forgetting and boost your memory.
1. Use Spaced learning
Reviewing new information at different points is key to helping you remember.
You can space the new info review, an hour, a day, three days, and a week after. This way, you strengthen the new info
2. Overlearning
Ebbinghaus pointed out that putting more effort into learning, like taking notes, can help strengthen your knowledge.
3. Make the information meaningful
Connecting what you've learned into real life scenarios helps a lot. It makes knowledge practical and adds real life stories to it.
4. Keep challenging your memory
The more you recall the information, the more meaningful it becomes. Ask yourself questions, join conversations where the information is being discussed and you'll hardly forget.
