The show takes place in the Ohtori Academy. A blend of Invisible College, kofun & War Academy, little outside the gates affects the student body & faculty. It’s as if the school is a kind of purgatory. The Student Council are working in secret for someone named End of the World.
These ‘dualists’ seek the Power of Dios, the dreaming Prince in the castle waiting for Revolution. The Council fight for the hand of Rose Bride Anthy. She is the key to the crown of creation. Utena is initiated into a secret society bent on Revolutionizing the world by combat
This rose sigil on her ring allows her to break the seal and enter the world stage. A Prince riding a pale horse gifted it to her. He told Utena to act with noble strength.

Utena’s final test is with the Chairman of the Academy aka the End of the World. He’s the Rose Bride’s brother &…lover. Turns out he’s the devil & he manipulates the duelists in order to reunite w Dios in his former glory. His arc is spent seducing the council to fight Utena.
With his students failing to defeat Utena, he turns his powers of seduction on her. Akio hopes to prevent her from revolutionizing the world. He’s always wanted that for himself. She ultimately rejects his offer to run away together & they meet for a final confrontation.
In the End, Akio is unable to open the Rose Gate as He is the Lord of this World. Try as he might to instigate the Children of the Grave to march with Revolution in their minds, he really needed to show them love was still alive. The Academy is his tomb & he can’t wake the dead.
Cryptic Masonry symbolism is repeated again & again. Like the ‘Tyler’ of the Temple, the cherub w the flaming blade or Heimdall at the gate of Asgard the Sword cleaves the world in two. It’s telos is a penetrative desire, a love that attracts & polarizes
