In 2021, I read 150+ books about copywriting.
Most people make writing copy complicated.
Here are 9 basics about copywriting you'll understand in less than 3 minutes...
1. Talk to your customer.
Use your research to identify their pain points.
At this point, you're not selling anything, just listening and learning.
The better you understand who you're selling to, the easier it'll be to write.
This is where your 'customer avatar' comes in.
2. Invent honesty
Most people can tell when they're being deceived.
Even if you somehow manage to sell to them with dishonesty, they'll resent you for it.
Build trust first, you'll attract buyers.
Sell to your clients and piss them off, they will never buy from you again.
3. Central Selling Idea (CSI).
Be specific about your offer.
State exactly what's your offer.
Having a clear CSI before will help you when writing.
The more your customer has to think and interpret what you mean, the less likely they are to buy.
Unclear CSI: โ€œSign up to my newsletter, and you will learn to write betterโ€.
Clear CSI: โ€œBecome a world-class copywriter in 100 daysโ€.
4. Have a clear call to action (CTA)
All copy should be driving to one action.
Whether itโ€™s a purchase or a sign-up,
Remember, youโ€™re leading the customer to an action.
So...
Before you start writing, pinch out one goal, then lead them to it.
5. Be Clear, never Clever
If your customer has to think too hard, theyโ€™ll get bored and move on.
6. Write like you talk
Copywriting is a conversation.
Don't talk at your customer, talk with them
You have to be creative to keep up with the conversation
So...
While you talk with your customer, be fun.
7. Make it Scannable.
Every one skims, that's a fact.
On the internet, that's a way of life
5.25 seconds is the average human attention span.
So...
Make your copy easy on the eyes.
That's what separates the 0.1% from 99.9%.
8. Practice daily
Copywriting is like a game.
The more you play, the better you get.
Wake up and write without a second thought
Do this every day
Mark my words
You'll be a copy jedi in no time.
9. Never use a complex word when a simple one will do.
Also, never use a simple word when the complex one is better.
