Respectfully, I don't actually see a lot of people "starting to accept" that they "actually have to win the war". Like unless "war" here is some airy metaphor for the marketplace of ideas.
In fact, the total unreality of actual "war" is the big theme on both left and right.
You think this guy was talking in metaphors? He was not. And so for him, "starting to accept that he had to win the war" meant preparing for what would turn out to be a decades long conflict that left China in ruins.
I fail to see modern evidence of this realization.
