5 Steps To Master Decision Making:
Let’s not overcomplicate the situation:
“I believe that if you regularly make the right choice- and it takes practice; it takes effort-the more you make the right choice, the easier it gets.” Adam Neumann
Right choices are born from making right and wrong decisions.
If you make the right choice you double down.
If you make a wrong choice you stop and pivot.
There are hundreds of decision-making processes out there.
Which one is the best to use in day-to-day situations?
Here are 4 simple steps:
1. Know Your Outcome
Ask yourself these questions:
What should the outcome be?
What will the likely outcome be?
What would you like the outcome to be?
This will help paint a clear picture of your realistic options.
From here you can set measurable targets to track if your decision has a positive outcome.
Your first move is to make clear goals.
2. Identify Your Problem
Without knowing the real problem you certainly won’t have a real solution.
Is it a recurring issue?
Is this a one-time problem?
What’s the root of this problem?
Have others had the same problem?
In life, most of your problems are not one-time events.
Most of them have been faced by others.
Identify the problem and research what others have done.
3. Decide on a Solution
When it comes to solutions you want to think in systems.
What is the system that bests solves this problem?
When you set up the system think about this:
How long does it take?
What result will it give?
How does it affect your other systems?
If your solution takes too long ❌
If your solution doesn’t produce results ❌
If your solution clashes with other systems❌
Make sure you look at the whole picture before taking action.
4. Take Action
I shouldn’t have to say this but I know I need to.
You must act on your solution.
So many people…
Set a budget and never follow it.
Plan to workout and never hit the weights.
Plan to track certain metics and it doesn’t get done.
Take action that very day.
Too many people wait until the next day or next week and then it never gets done and they’re stuck with the same problem.
Even if it’s something small, take the first step.
5. Make Changes
Your solution probably won’t work out perfectly.
Don’t suffer with the solution if it doesn’t work.
Being willing to assess and make changes.
All changes should be seen as tests to improve the process.
Conclusion:
Decision-making is easier when you:
Know your goal.
Discover the problem.
Come up with a solution.
Take action right away.
Make changes to improve the solution
