The astounding health benefits of CHAMOMILE
// A Thread //
Chamomile is one of the oldest, most widely used, and well-documented medicinal plants in the world, and has been recommended for a variety of healing applications.
It is often referred to as the “star among medicinal species.”
Chamomile has been used in herbal remedies for thousands of years, known in ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome.
This herb has been believed by Anglo-Saxons as 1 of 9 sacred herbs given to humans by the lord.
The main constituents of the flowers include several phenolic compounds, primarily the flavonoids: apigenin, quercetin, patuletin, luteolin and their glucosides.
Chamomile is useful for:
- Insomnia, Depression, Anxiety
- Premenstrual syndrome
- Sore throat, Common Colds
- Inflammatory Conditions, Diabetes
- Various gastrointestinal conditions such as stomachaches, IBS, ulcerative colitis
Chamomile possesses properties that are:
- Antioxidant
- Antimicrobial
- Antidepressant
- Antidiarrheal
- Anticarcinogenic
- Antidiabetic
- Promote angiogenesis
Animal model studies also indicate:
- potent anti-inflammatory action
- antimutagenic and cholesterol-lowering activities
- antispasmodic and anxiolytic effects.
But, human studies are somewhat limited.
The relaxing qualities of chamomile are at least partly achieved by apigenin, an antioxidant that has many tranquilizing properties.
It binds to the benzodiazepine receptors in our brain and acts as a sleep inducer together with several other compounds found in chamomile.
In recent years, apigenin has been increasingly recognized as a cancer chemopreventive agent.
“Based on the studies provided apigenin affects several critical pathways and/or targets which are associated with several health disorders including cancer.”
Apigenin has been demonstrated to help in improving cardiovascular conditions, stimulate the immune system, and provide some protection against cancer.

Here are some additional studies on the various benefits of Chamomile:
ANTI-ANXIETY EFFECTS:
“The present findings suggest that chamomile may possess modest anxiolytic effect in patients with mild generalized anxiety disorder.

SLEEP IMPROVEMENT

"In a human study, the efficacy of chamomile tea on depression, insomnia, and boredom in women following childbirth was evaluated and it was demonstrated that Chamomile tea may be used to reduce depression and improve sleep problems for postpartum women."

DIABETES
“Chamomile demonstrated beneficial effects on the control of blood sugar and fatty acids in patients with type 2 diabetes.
In animal studies, chamomile has a glucose-lowering effect in diabetic rats; consumption can be useful in lowering postprandial glucose levels.”
For some, drinking chamomile tea can exacerbate topical skin rashes and has caused anaphylaxis in sensitized individuals.
This is most common in people who are allergic to other plants in the daisy family (e.g. marigolds, chrysanthemums).
