They're needs like Air, Water, Food, Warmth, Shelter, Sleep and most recently, SEX.

While self actualization needs are self-Fulfilment,Personal Growth & Realizing Personal Potentials.
Now,it's important we understand that self actualization is subjective. What brings fulfilment or growth to one might not bring same to another, Maslow said this himself.

Self actualization needs are also time bound.What brings self actualization at one point in life will be different from what brings in other phases of life.For instance, for a young lady who just left secondary school,gaining admission maybe what brings to her self actualization.
For an undergraduate, her basic need might be getting a new pair of shoes while his self actualization needs might be getting money to pay his school fees. He might deny himself of this "need" just to save to pay his fees- actualising need.
Let's get deeper to the more basic needs, food and sleep.
It is possible to deny yourself of this for days, weeks just to pray in other to bring your self actualization needs to fulfilment. Many of us on many occasions have denied ourselves of sleep to read & pass our exams.

What brings fulfilment to a suicide bomber is to get others killed, he wouldn't be thinking of sex (basic needs) while doing this. He wouldn't even eat nor sleep until he does this and get himself killed in the process.
With these few points, I believe I've been able to convince and not to confuse you that it is very possible to be self actualised without first meeting the basic needs.
