obviously lots of people write stupid things on substack (i.e. stuff i personally disagree with), but it's always silly to call a successful substack a "grift." readers like the content or want to support the writer and so give them money and then can easily cancel, pretty simple
if you're looking at real existing unsavory business practices in the media, look at advertorial content, paid inserts in print publications, and how hard it is to unsubscribe from many mainstream publications
