The 180-year-old company John Deere, $DE, has a trick up its sleeve.
It’s quietly become a powerhouse in Artificial Intelligence & Autonomous Driving.
Here’s what you need to know:
🧵
On January 6, 2022, Deere unveiled its 1st fully autonomous tractor.
The 44,000-pound tractor can be steered from your smartphone and harnesses the power of $NVDA GPUs.
It also lets farmers watch from their phones using the tractor’s 12 cameras.
$DE has been able to develop its autonomous driving quickly, due to farmland having no pedestrians, crosswalks, or other cars.
But why does this matter?
Farms are facing a labor shortage with fewer Americans working on the farm.
Farmers in the US are getting older, with the average age of 60.
Farmers will have to feed 10 billion people in 2050!
It's critical to make sure we can produce the food we need to survive.
Deere has also been testing satellite technology.
The satellites feed information to autonomous tractors to adjust them in real-time.
This allows the company to make quick decisions about what to do with the vehicle at any given moment, hands free.
$DE is also amassing climate data from farms around the world and using it to make forecasts about microclimates.
This info tells farmers the optimal time to plant and how historical climate events have affected crops.
$DE is aggregating data from over 250 sources about precise seed, nutrient, and pesticide placement.
Farmers can see data on how/when to plant particular crops, optimal seed depth, and how to use pesticides most efficiently.
This data can save inches in each row, in turn squeezing much more production from each acre of farmland.
A growing population needs a sustainable food strategy behind it and Deere’s data will help us do just that!
Another advancement $DE has in its AI is their See & Spray technology.
High-res cameras capture 20 images per second.
Based on the images and AI, the system recognises the difference between cultivated plants and weeds so that individual plants can be specifically treated.
Lastly, $DE has released an autonomous drone sprayer.
This drone is equipped with a weed scanner and applies pesticides precisely to them.
It can fly 30 mins & can can spray from the air regardless of ground conditions.
TL;DR:
$DE has quietly become a leader in autonomous driving & artificial intelligence.
Its technology is revolutionizing the agriculture industry as we know it.
That’s a wrap!
