Want to master storytelling?
These 5 images will help:
1)
1) Fill your Idea Moat.
Create a database of ideas. Take tons of notes and research your favorite movies. Push the bounds of your creativity.
The wider your moat, the less you'll lose motivation.
2) Collaborate.
Gone are the days of working in isolation, hacking away on a typewriter in a dark room. Different people have different ideas. Talk to them.
It always improves your story.
3) Get clarity.
Figure out what your story is about upfront. Define it as simply as possible, and you will be less likely to get lost.
Give your story purpose and direction.
4) Build story pillars.
If you have clarity and direction, you can see which elements are needed. Put the details into columns, making sure each serves the story.
Add unused information to the extra materials pile, and keep it in mind for later.
5) Use a structure.
Human brains like patterns. It doesn't matter how many exciting elements you include, if you don't structure it properly you increase your chances of failure.
Follow well-used structures until you are comfortable enough to experiment.
