Tirthankara images, Siddhachal Caves, Gwalior Fort (15th cen)
The inscription credit the Tomar Rajput kings of Gwalior for its creation.
These Tirthankara idols were defaced around 1527 by Babur after Raja Vikramaditya Tomar of Gwalior was martyred, fighting against him.
Raja Vikramaditya was last of Tomar Kings to rule Gwalior who reigned from 1375 to 1527.
After the fall of Vikramaditya, Babur ordered its destruction, he quotes in his memoir:
"Greatest fault consists in the idol figures all about it: I directed these idols to be destroyed."
The Jain cave temples within the Gwalior Fort were mutilated by chopping off the faces, the organs and their limbs.
Centuries later, the Jain community restored many of the statues by adding back stucco heads on the top of the damaged idols.
Tomar dynasty of Gwalior was survived by Vikramaditya's son; Ramshah Tomar, who along with his 3 sons martyred at Haldighati.
Today, Raja Ramshah's descendants are survived by;
Dudsar, Lakhasar & Sawantsar Thikanas of Bikanar
Khetsar & Kelawa Kalan of Jodhpur
Dalniya of Jaipur
