Business Networking
As an introvert, I used to hate networking events.
But I learned how to overcome my anxiety and maximize their value.

10 tips to help you crush your next networking event:
• Prepare
Do a little research before the event to make the most of your time.
Look for:
â–¸ a list of attendees
â–¸ social media chatter
â–¸ who has been in the past

• Dress well
This may seem goofy, but how we dress says a lot about us.
Make sure you understand the dress code and match the expectation.
It shows respect to the host.

• Arrive on time
Being on time is never bad, but being late can be.
When a program or structure is unannounced and being late can get you noticed (in the wrong way).
Being on time shows respect to the organizers. Show up on time and thank those who put the event together.

• Smile and relax
Smiling invites others to talk to you. The reality is, others are nervous to be there too.
Ask yourself: what’s the worst case scenario?
It’s likely not that bad.

• Start with questions
People love to talk about themselves, plus it takes the pressure off of you.
Remember their answers and bring them back into the conversation later or at a future date.

• Move about the room
It’s easy find someone to talk to and monopolize their time.
Set a target to talk to at least 5-6 people (depending on the event).
Try and mix 2 of each:
â–¸ New connections
â–¸ Loose connections
â–¸ Deep connections

• Go deep with 1 or 2
I like to start by having short conversations with many, then narrowing in on 1 or 2 to go deeper in conversation.
Don’t let fear stop you from approaching your ideal target. Remember: they’re at the event for a reason, as well.

• Be a connector
Many go to these events wanting something.
Be prepared and ready to help them achieve their goals.
When you’re a connector, people draw closer and you get more opportunities to connect.
When you make the right connections, people remember it for years.

• Bring value
When the opportunity arises, it’s okay to offer your services.
Offer something small for free or at a discount to garner favor and show you value the relationship.

• Follow up
Pick at least 2-3 people from the event to reach out to afterward.
Sometimes it’ll be just an email, but others could be asking for lunch or a meeting.

Networking is intimidating, but almost always worth it.
The only way to get over the hump is to jump in the fire.
