I prefer Robertson to Diaz:
Last season, Robertson had a 0.76 expected chance of returning (xGi + xCS) per 90 v Diaz's 0.55 (xGi).
Diaz was subbed in 7 of his 11 starts & with the 5 subs rule that could limit his chances to haul big. Also factor in that Robertson is Β£1m cheaper
Because of how good Liverpool's fixtures are, the 3rd Liverpool slot is a set & forget until you WC.
Pick whoever you of Robertson or Diaz you think is better regardless of structure. Don't pick Diaz just because it's easier to jump on a Β£8m mid as it's an unlikely possibility!
Points per start since Diaz's arrival:
Salah 7.8
Robertson 7.2
Diaz 5.4
1) This is despite Salah being "out of form" in that spell. Salah over Diaz simply because of his reliability and explosiveness as a (c). Enough bargains elsewhere
2) Robertson over Diaz for Β£1m less
Andy Robertson
Since GW14 last season
Number of starts: 20
Number of matches where he failed to deliver a return: 2
Number of matches where he registered either a clean sheet or an attacking return: 18
Number of double digit hauls: 6
FPL points per game: 7.4
Insane consistency
xGi per 90
(since Diaz's arrival)
Salah 1.1
Mane/Diaz 0.7
Salah over Diaz or even Nunez as his data is stronger and he is on penalties. A Liverpool (c) is needed for ful CRY mun BOU NEW - Salah seems most reliable & has the numbers
We're officially reaching that stage of the season where the no Salah drafts look sexy on paper until the time we all come back scrambling to buy him an hour before the GW1 deadline
Confident that the significant majority of FPL managers on Twitter will debate Salah v no Salah all pre-season only to panic an hour before the GW1 deadline seeing him play a promoted side & ending up with him as (c) anyway. Spare yourself the time guys!
Think the key to unlocking a good three premium draft is to have an Arsenal defender as a starter in your 11. Arsenal only play Man United from last season's top 6 in their opening 8 fixtures. I'd be fairly comfortable having a defender as permaplay in a three premium team
Ask yourself which of the following combinations is better:
*Kane/Son & Β£4.5m def
OR
*Jesus & Robertson/Chilwell + Β£1m
Therein lies your answer on whether or not to pick three premiums. Jesus is the single most reason I don't think picking a three premium squad is optimal
"I'm the number 9, I'm a striker. I have come to score goals. I will be there - 90 minutes per game in the box to help. Not with goals, but also with assists"
Exactly what you want to hear as a Gabriel Jesus owner. Almost get the feeling you're owning a premium striker at Β£8m!
Gabriel Jesus is officially owned by more managers than Mo Salah at the moment.
Seriously though, Β£8m does seem fairly reasonable for a nailed #9 for a top six team with such amazing attacking fixtures. His pre-season form being the cherry on the top
Personally favor owning 2 premiums over 3.
Don't like the overdependence on the 3rd premium player to go big each week in a 3 premium team. Pick the 2 premiums you want to (c) & build around it. Something like Robertson + Jesus + 1m is better than Dalot + Kane for example
I'm hesitant to pick Ederson/Laporte for GW1 despite their generous price because I think that if Foden/Mahrez hit form at any point once the season begins, they would be gamebreakers.
I want to give myself the flexibility of picking one of them along with Cancelo/Haaland
Really hoping Mahrez can nail down a place in the City side now that Sterling & Jesus are gone. Will have a proper pre-season so hoping he can show some form.
Worth noting he had a non-penalty xGi per 90 of 0.64 v Diaz's 0.55 last season who's a big template pick at the moment
Call it boring but generally the template picks tend to do fairly well!
Starting with a template team is a sound strategy - you can stay on par with the rest of the pack initially & then pick your moments to attack later. Start poorly & it's very hard to make up ground
One thing with City and Liverpool having such good starts is that teams will be more template than usual in GW1 this season. Most of the weaker teams have poor fixtures to begin with which will also mean there will be less variety in the budget enablers to choose from as well
Despite the fact that we can be more "aggressive" initially with the introduction of unlimited transfers post the World Cup, I don't think an early Wildcard will come into play.
Most of the template picks are from the best teams with great fixtures who are unlikely to fail
Cancelo at Β£7m is very appealing. Playing for the best defence in the league with amazing fixtures to begin with. Had the most shots among all defenders in the league in 21/22 & was 3rd among all City players for big chances created. Also super underrated at accumulating bonus
Cancelo is one player who hasn't left my team even once. I keep seeing teams with 3 premiums without him. I'd argue he's as explosive as Haaland or Kane.
whu BOU new CRY NFO The fixtures have returns written all over them.
The guy was 1st among defenders for shots last season!
Toney with v without Eriksen
21/22
Non penalty xG per game: 0.37 v 0.23
Big chances per game: 0.97 v 0.29
Brentford xG per game: 1.75 v 1.24
Huge drop in numbers for both Brentford & Toney. One of the reasons why Toney may not start as strongly as he ended last season
xGi per 90
21/22
Salah 1.2
Haaland 0.9 (Bundesliga)
Kane 0.9
Son 0.8
KDB 0.7
This is why in my opinion, KDB is the least preferred of the premium choices. Haaland has a better career xGi per 90 & my guess is that he would take penalties after Mahrez's miss v West Ham
xG conceded per game
2022
20) Norwich
19) Leeds
18) Southampton
17) Leicester
16) Wolves
Seen lots of FPL managers with Leicester/Wolves defenders in their teams. Both sides have had a woeful year defensively...
I have no idea why people are selecting Digne/Cash in their squads.
Both don't feature even in the top 15 among defenders for xGi per 90 since Gerrard took over. Both Arsenal & Brighton had a better xG conceded than Villa in this spell and have defenders available for cheaper!!
Chelsea's record v Everton in the previous 8 games at Goodison:
1 win, 2 clean sheets, 6 losses.
Chelsea's GW1 fixture may not be as favorable as it appears to be. Everton have been a bit of a bogey team.
Alisson's price of Β£5.5m is interesting. I still don’t think he’s worth buying even if fit though - with top teams like Liverpool and City, I tend to go for the more explosive options rather than look for bargains
Here is my Fantasy5 GW1 selection. Neves, Rice, Kane & Jorginho are on penalties which gives them a realistic chance of beating their targets. Martial should start ahead of Ronaldo with his form which gives him a good chance of beating his Fantasy5 target of 6.5 points.
