Americans are fat, and it's killing our kids.
Here's how to fix that:
1. Lead by example
If you aren’t healthy, your kids likely won’t be either. You have to show them what it takes. They are always watching you. If they see that health is a priority for you, it will become one for them as well.
2. Physical activity is a family activity
Family time shouldn’t only be spent in front of a TV. Get your kids active. Play ball, cornhole, frisbee, ride bikes, go for a walk. There are so many things you can do to get your kids active, make it a part of daily life.
3. Never buy junk food
“I can’t get him to quit drinking soda”. Stop buying it! Simple. You are not depriving your kids by not letting them eat junk all the time. They will get handed plenty of junk at school, church, and grandma’s. Don’t add to it at home.
4. Don't use food as a reward
This ties food to the reward systems in the brain that can create bad habits. Don’t bribe your kids with food. It can create bad habits later in life.
5. Enforce healthy sleep habits
Bedtime has to be enforced. Sleep is crucial for your child’s health. Most kids need 9+ hours of sleep. Make sure they get it. Lead by example again by going to bed at a regular time. If they see you staying up late, they will want to as well.
6. Cook their meals
Home cooked meals are much healthier than packaged alternatives. It's also great family time. At the very least you should be cooking them breakfast and dinner every day when time allows. Cooking breakfast, not cereal or other junk food.
7. Help them relieve stress
Kids are under a lot of stress. Help them relieve it by doing things they enjoy. Take them to the park, have friends over, let them play a video game sometimes. They are kids after all. They need to play.
