Socioeconomic statistics indicate that introducing Sharia (eg, in Northern Nigeria) has rapid and significant effects on parent-child relations
It leads to
(1) more children
(2) higher levels of parental care for children (eg higher rates of vaccination, more breastfeeding)
How are these effects to be explained? It is argued that:
1. Sharia imposes strict duties on parents to care for children
2. Sharia requires children to care for elderly parents. This increases parents' desire for children and causes them to invest more time/money in children
