15 lessons in leadership from the greatest sporting dynasty the world has ever known:
Sweep The Sheds
*Never be too big to do the small things that need to be done*
After every match—win or lose—the players literally grab brooms,
and sweep up their mess.
Leaving the place better.
Why?
Because no one looks after All Blacks.
All Blacks look after themselves.
Go For The Gap
*When you’re on top of your game, change your game*
Momentum swings faster than you think.
You either adapt or you lose.
A sustainable competitive advantage is achieved
..by the development of a continuously self-adjusting culture.
It’s why;
Values > Culture
Play With Purpose
*Ask ‘Why?’*
Each time they take the pitch,
All Blacks play for something bigger than winning.
They play to inspire and unite New Zealand.
As they say;
Better People Make Better All Blacks
..and better All Blacks will,
Leave The Jersey In A Better Place
Pass The Ball
*Leaders create leaders*
..by passing on responsibility, creating ownership, accountability & trust.
Shared responsibility means shared ownership.
The result is a team of individuals prepared and able,
..to step up and find a way to win.
Create A Learning Environment
*Leaders are teachers*
Legendary leaders look beyond their own field to;
•Push the margins
•Learn best practices
•Discover new approaches
All Blacks seek ‘Marginal Gains’
100 things done 1% better to deliver a cumulative competitive advantage
No Dickheads
*Follow the spearhead*
To win, All Blacks must move in one direction.
No one is bigger than the team.
And, even one selfish mindset will infect a collective culture.
As John Wooden said:
“A player who makes the team great is better than a great player.”
Embrace Expectations
*Aim for the highest cloud*
All Blacks tap into the power of storytelling to;
‘Sing Their World Into Existence’
They tell great, vivid, epic stories of what is possible to themselves.
And soon..
The world repeats the story back to them...
Train To Win
*Practice under pressure*
For All Blacks—pressure is privilege.
They train it with:
•Randomness
•Unpredictability
•Constant questioning
combined with pace & intensity to stress test decision making.
No whistles for mistakes; instead they learn to be present.
Keep A Blue Head
*Control your attention*
People who choke exert conscious control over the complex task.
They fail to stay in the moment.
To stay cool, All Blacks use mantras w/personal meaning,
as mental roadmaps to bring attention back to the present in times of pressure.
Know Thyself
*Keep It Real*
To know how to win, you first must know how to lose.
To know how to lose, you first have to know who you are.
For All Blacks, this begins with;
Honesty & Integrity
In knowing ourselves, we live our vision.
By being our word, we make it happen.
Champions Do Extra
*Find something you would die for and give your life to it*
All Blacks brand of courage is this:
•Sacrifice
•Never surrender
•Spill blood for the team
For the best in the world, nothing less will do.
Life is brief, so whatever we do best be worth it.
Invent A Language
*Sing your world into existence*
Leaders are storytellers.
& all great organizations are born from a compelling story.
It begins w/
•Values
•Metaphors
•Vocabulary
•Mottos & Mantras
Words start revolutions.
But, w/o personal meaning they’re worthless.
Ritualize To Actualize
*Create A Culture*
Building trust, developing people & driving high-performance behaviors are never ending tasks.
Rituals are key to reinforcing the emotional glue.
Among many others, the All Blacks infamous haka reconnects them with their core purpose.
Be A Good Ancestor
*Plant trees you’ll never see*
True leaders are stewards of the future.
As an All Black;
“You don’t own the jersey, you’re just the body in the jersey at the time.”
Our actions today will echo beyond our time.
They are our legacy...
Write Your Legacy
*This is your time*
When a player makes the All Blacks, they’re given a book.
The 1st page shows a jersey—the 1905 Originals.
Where it began.
The next page—1924 jersey. And then another, until present day.
The final pages are blank.
Waiting to be filled…
It’s impossible to do proper justice to the legacy that is,
The New Zealand All Blacks
To feel the true power of their dynasty,
I’d strongly encourage you to read ‘Legacy’ by James Kerr.
It’s the 1st book I recommend to all Coaches & aspiring leaders.
