EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION
Emergency contraception can prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or if the contraception used has failed
We use emergency contraception in:
1. After unprotected sex intercourse
2. forgotten to take regular pills
3. condom slips or breaks
4. rape,..1/8
methods of emergency contraception:
1. combined pills (2tabs taken in a space of 12hrs). It's important to note that since you have taken too much hormonal pills, this can cause nausea and vomiting....2/8
2. mifepristone as small as 10mg is used for emergency..3
3. levonorgestral pill
it's available over the counter
should be taken as soon as possible within 24hrs & if delayed 72hrs
dose 1.5mg single dose
if tab has 0.75mg take 2tabs in a space of 12hrs
how does it work?
- delay ovulation/inhibit ovulation
-prevent fertilization...4/8
IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE ON THE LEVONORGESTRAL PILL
-can be used by any woman
-no medical complications reported about it
-not associated with fetal malformation Incase pregnancy is established
-no increased risk of ectopic pregnancy.....
-it can't cause abortion if already established pregnancy.
-doesn't prevent implantation according to the recent research
How effective is the levonorgestral pill
If taken within 72hrs but more effective if used within 12-24hrs....6
2. IUCD-cuT
most effective form of contraception effective after 5days after intercourse and once fitted mother can continue using as a method of contraception.
It prevents fertilization and also implantation.....
NOTE:
- IUCD-cuT not preferred for women who have increased risk of STI or who have active genital infection
-IUCD-cuT not preferred in rape victims....7/8
If more than 72hrs then there better options:
1. ulipristal acetate pill however it's prescribed by a doctor.
it's dose is 30mg
effective for upto 120hrs(5days) after sexual intercourse.
