How to make your voice heard on the internet.
Framework of the social media Gods.
We'll start with a very simple concept without which public success is impossible.
Leverages.
Let's understand what leverage is:
Historically, Leverage comes in three forms:
1. Money
2. Human resources
3. Rhetorical influence, the ability to convince and persuade.
The ability to engage people in a movement.
(The kind of leverage that gurus are good at).
Mastering this influence is the guarantee to have powerful people drink your words and shine your shoes.
But this leverage is only possible thanks to communication channels to spread your ideas.
500 years ago it would have been much harder because you would have had to rely on powerful people with money and resources.
That's why the three types of leverages were interconnected.
With technology, a fourth form of leverage has emerged, scalability of distribution pushed to the extreme by the power of the internet, and social content platforms.
All this has reshuffled the leverage cards.
Because today you can create a huge leverage from nothing:
No money.
Without an army.
This leverage is a real social elevator without which many of the new fortunes you see on the internet could never have been created.
Once you have reached the top level of leverage, you can monetize it. You can exchange it for money and human resources.
Even better, when someone reaches a certain level of leverage, i.e. when the people who follow him are numerous enough for it to play on the cognitive side of social proof, it becomes easier and easier to make new people join.
The proofs of commitment from other people are seen as demonstrations of leverage.
Those of you who have been reading me for a long time know that when faced with power, humans are inherently admiring (or jealous).
At this level, followers cease to think rationally.
People who have this leverage become magnetic.
The game of leverage is therefore a game that is harder at the beginning, but which gradually benefits from a cumulative effect.
Some people naturally have more ability to unite around themselves, but when you succeed in identifying the mechanisms of influence in action, and the leverage that works best on others, you can build your game.
How to build your leverage?
Pretty simple.
The first thing to do is to differentiate yourself from other players in your niche.
This happens on two levels:
β–ͺ️Level of substance.
β–ͺ️Level of form.
Let's discuss them separately:
I. The content.
On the substantive level, this involves the ability to break the codes.
Most of the actors on the already established markets invariably fall into the copy/pasta.
Warmed up concepts, heard millions of times because repeated millions of times.
A monotonous and repetitive space gives the opportunity to stand out.
This is the time to work on your ideas, to do research and to present new ideas.
In order to break the codes, you have to know them first.
A little intellectual work is a crucial condition for success.
Take a concept that everyone seems to agree on.
Analyze it in all directions and find the flaw (there is always one).
Create a different framework and BOOM, you have your concept.
Create an enemy.
Preferably with a perception of power that you will draw as sclerotic, outdated and counterproductive.
The enemy does not have to be a real person, it can be a concept.
Example:
Ryan Holyday says Ego is the enemy.
@Egodriven says that Ryan Holyday is the enemy.
Let's move to the form now.
@EgoDriven II. Form.
To attract attention, you must also be able to break the aesthetic codes of the environment.
In the case of the form, you must absolutely develop a recognizable visual identity:
Branding.
@EgoDriven For this, you will go against the common norm.
A little trick here is to mix elements that are in principle in opposition.
Example: Wearing a suit was the norm in companies for a very long time, so tech gurus had to break that by investing in the now iconic hoodie and jeans.
@EgoDriven It's important to note that counter-culture often becomes the dominant culture because everyone is wearing it.
I think that this branding element deserves a piece of its own.
